As defined by the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, a person has a “migration background” if they or at least one of their parents were not born with German citizenship.

Altogether, 22.5% of the German population had a “migration background” in 2016 (according to the Micro-Census).

71% of students with a “migration background” were born in Germany. 69% of them have German citizenship and 12% have dual citizenship.
