64% of the surveyed “international” professors in the “MOBIL” research project (covering universities in the states of Berlin and Hesse) had parents who were university graduates.

In Germany, a disproportionately high percentage of university lecturers (45%) come from university-educated families.

The study’s definition of “international” professors is based on the Micro-Census’s definition of “people with a migration background.” This includes “all immigrant individuals who currently hold or formerly held foreign citizenship along with their children born in Germany.” Many professors take a critical view of the term “migration background” and do not identify with it because “it has negative connotations and does not befit their high qualifications.”
