• Students at public universities

Because the General Act on Equal Treatment (AGG) is focused on labor law, students at public universities cannot lodge claims under the AGG. Students at private universities are an exception, provided they enter into contracts under civil law. However, in their role as employers, public universities are indeed bound by the provisions of the AGG. In other words, both academic and non-academic staff may defend themselves against direct or indirect discrimination on the basis of the AGG. Students may invoke the AGG as employees of universities or of other employers.
