In summer semester 2016, a total of 22% of students in Germany had completed a vocational apprenticeship program before enrolling in a university. The percentage was only 14% at academic universities, but was as much as 36%, over a third, of students at polytechnics and technical universities.
Almost two-thirds (65%) of students with previous vocational apprenticeships come from non-university-educated families.
A quarter of students with previous vocational apprenticeships study engineering (25%), another quarter study law or business (23%), but only 9% study medicine or health sciences.
